75 years ago some 500 Spanish republican refugees arrived in Caussade, where they were housed in what is today the Lycee Jean Louis Etienne. With meagre cooking facilities these families fleeing Franco's Spain made their temporary home in the refuge until they were assimilated into the community. Some weeks later republican soldiers arrived and were interned in Septfonds. In memory of these exiles, many of whom joined the resistance, a street has been named "Rue des Republicains Espagnols" in the town and was inaugurated at the weekend.
