100 years ago: commemoration concert next Sunday

The terrible events of the first world war ended on 11th November 1918 - 100 years ago next Sunday.
But the memories did not end then and every year people assemble at the various monuments bearing the names of local young men who died in that war and subsequent conflicts.
As a special event the Maitrise of the Conservatoire de Toulouse, under the direction of Mark Opstad, will be singing a selection of music including the Requiem of Durufle and songs by English composers. This choir was voted the best in France in 2017 and awarded the prestigious Lillian Bettancourt Foundation prize.
A poignant feature of this concert is that the Maitrise comprises mainly children aged 11 - 18 who are Mark's pupils and who are from a generation which should be reminded of the sacrifice their great grandparents made and the futility of such conflicts.
The concert starts at 16h (4pm) and takes place in the beautiful church of St Corneille at Puycelsi.
Tickets are 15 euros for adults and may be reserved from Ross and Ginny Jenkins on 0563 33 15 84

Najac concert for the Handsome Family (and Jason Toth)

The Handsome Family have written some of the most haunting and beautiful songs in American music. During their 25-year career Brett and Rennie Sparks (a.k.a. The Handsome Family) have created songs that transform the mundane landscape of modern life into a place of mysterious portent. As Greil Marcus said, “… their everyday surrealism has no parallel in contemporary writing…”

There are a lot of new faces at their shows these days, thanks to “Far From Any Road,” which became a global hit when it was used as the theme to season one of True Detective. Both Guns ’N Roses and Bruce Springsteen have used the song as walk-in music and it is often played at hockey games. And, believe it or not— David Bowie’s recently published notebooks contain a line that simply says, “Handsome Family.” Who knows what might have been?

This September, Brett and Rennie, along with Alex McMahon (guitars, steel, keyboards) and Jason Toth (drums, keyboards, sampler) will perform their brand of gothic Americana throughout Spain, France, and Italy, including their stop at Camping des Etoiles in the Aveyron outside of Najac where drummer Jason has been living for almost a year.

Folk'n'Jazz John Taylor Charity Concert

Folk'n'Jazz now does a three part summer tour in outdoor venues, but this one at La Vigérie is very much associated with John because it was he who first had the idea of a themed concert there, in 2014.  All proceeds go to Médecins sans frontières, and of course thanks to Jeremy and Iga for the superb venue, which even has a very attractive indoor alternative.   Very important:

Please bring a folding (or otherwise portable) chair.
