Welcome, bienvenue to Varen, Ludivine et Jean Sebastien

I hate to gloat that our village is Varen but we are a village that is rapidly trying to improve, improve what you may ask.
Well services for one thing.
We have a great medical centre with Doctors,  nurses, physiotherapist, podologue, and a brilliantly friendly chemists'.
We have a children's school, a library.
A post office, bar, hairdresser, boulangerie.
A shop with new young owners who in the first days open have shown us the cut of their jib.
We have the most lively vibrant market which even in winter we get a great footfall through.
With numerous vegetable stalls, two at least bio, Estabuffette with her fab pastry, quiches and citron tarts,
A fish man with stall to die for, we spend too much there each Saturday (we love fresh fish).
A meat van from Laguepie, great meat with a lovely man with his son.
The now famous Moulin de Varen who will reopen at the beginning of March, they do deserve a holiday
I could go on but I must then say with two shops open on Friday 15h to 17 h and 9 till 12 on market day the Varen friperie of Mains Tendues 82 is helping to change the face of the village.
It is our village and we are proud of it.

Thank you for telling me about that Val, said tongue in cheek!

Marcia Scott's words as we backed out of the old Mairie near the end of a meeting of the Comité des Fetes. Malc had seen it was the AGM on the village notice board and thought with the events we organised last year in the village it might be useful to meet the comité des fetes members.
I have never seen teenagers in the village till tonight and sitting around the table was a bunch of kids, I do not think I was ever that young. The secretary and treasurer were middle aged and seemed to have it all under control. The Mayor sat next to me and I said "where did all these youngsters come from?" It worked out they had been born in the village but many now lived in Laguepie or Milhars.
Marcia and I sneaked away when the kids got out their iphones to play rival bands they wanted to book for the summer, punching their fists in the air in time to the music. I have never felt soo old ...  definitely antiquated.
Tonight was not a language problem more an age thing. The kids probably wondered why the two grannies had come and the Mayor, well he sneaked off before us.
Now we know why we say every year  "who chooses  the bands at the summer fètes?"

A big story for our village Varen

Val says  We have known unofficially about this for about 4 weeks but as we were told by the maires adjoint in an unofficial conversation we thought it better not to report at that time. The present landlords are retiring and need someone to take over the lease. If no one comes forward the village will be without a bar... I am singing  "a pub with no beer". Trouble is we would have beer but no one to pour it. We have always felt the bar had more potential and of course it is next to the boules pitch which has concours in the summer and the international team playing every Friday afternoon all year. Residents go for coffee after the market on Saturday and with a bit of effort cakes and pasties could be sold or even simple food at lunch time. No reason why it has to be taken over by a French person !

Another thought-   Varen will be the centre of the universe once the new health centre opens, imagine a visit to the doctor followed by tea and cakes, or a brandy and croissant! ( Malc says - when have we ever had a brandy and croissant. My answer "we have not,  but  we know people who do")
