Health care for the under 60's

When we arrived here all those years ago we were allowed into the French health care system even though "inactif" by paying our contributions to URSSAF based on our income. When one of us became eligible for the state retirement pension the form S1 put an end to paying contributions.
But talking to our younger acquaintances it seems that for those under 60 you need to be "actif" ie working.
Do any of you have ideas and suggestions, or experiences to assist younger retirees. For example is letting your home as a gite for the summer a micro enterprise? And how do you register it? I know that on our avis d'impots it is shown as such and we pay social charges on it. So does paying social charge lead automatically to a right to health cover?
Your thoughts welcomed.
