Running for trees

A run for solidarity with the plane trees of the Canal du Midi was held in Toulouse yesterday. Organisers were taken by surprise by the number of starters who paid up to 12 euros to take part - meaning a delay of an hour in the start. The canker which attacks the plane trees has already led to over 10000 iconic trees along the banks of the canal being cut down. The Canal is classified by Unesco as part of the world heritage and its 40000 plane trees are an important part of that appeal.
Funds raised by the action are destined to help with re-planting and the run to raise awareness of the problem.
