Dear Val and Malcolm,
Not just bees
Blackcaps are a migratory bird and I noticed this female in the prunus tree opposite the front door. At first I did not realise it was a blackcap, as its face was orange and it took a bit of research to discover that blackcaps are nectarivorous and that the orange face was in fact pollen.
Nectarivorous birds on a migratory stopover will feed on nectar from certain flowers. Over the course of 2-3 days this feeding supplies with them with a carbohydrate top up and will replenish their body mass which can be reduced as much as 50% from their migratory flight.
