The French Socialist minister sacked for lying to President François Hollande about his secret Swiss bank account, also reportedly had €2.5 million (£2 million) stashed in an account on the Isle of Man.
Jérôme Cahuzac, whose brief as budget minister included cracking down on tax cheats, plunged the government into crisis a year ago when he admitted, after repeated denials, that he had secretly €600,000 in Switzerland.
Sources close to the investigation suggested to Sud Ouest newspaper that Mr Cahuzac, a former hair-transplant surgeon, may have kept a lot more money hidden from French tax collectors.
