Watching BBC Tv last night [ sorry to mention it to those who have not yet been fixed] a body on a beach was found under a pier in the Detective series, Inspector George Gently. Without any feature other than the pier being shown I said ''that is Saltburn pier'' and after a few shots of the cliffs and the funicular railway office came in to view, my sighting was confirmed.
Now it is at least 60 years since I was a child playing on those beaches but it brought back memories of ice creams, donkey rides, yes I was always hanging round the donkeys and under the pier, by the pier legs were wonderful crabby, fossily sea- weedy puddles, where I caught wonderful things in my bucket.Oh! gosh and there was always a ''Punch and Judy man''
In the series it was said the posh people went to Whitby on their holidays, and once so did we,and although Whitby is wonderful, I always loved Marske and Saltburn best.
Malc says I remember the cold North wind straight off the sea, and the sea mist swirling down!
