Chateau Malescasse, a middle ranking producer has decided that the 2013 vintage claret is so poor that it will only market its wine as generic Haut Medoc, at about one fifth of its usual price. Most of us will remember that it was cold and wet in April and May, with hail in July and August. Rot in September meant an early harvest before the grapes were properly ripe, all resulting in a poor vintage.
The chateau's owner prefers to downgrade the year rather than put its reputation at risk. Many Bordeaux producers are angry about this, but industry sources admit that there will be no great 2013 Bordeaux wine.
