Interior Minister, Bernard Cazeneuve was visiting police HQ in a Paris arrondissement and a simple photo opportunity has caused a storm because in the background was a Confederate flag. The American civil war symbol of the south is widely regarded as standing for slavery and oppression and is rarely seen on France. A police spokesman denied it showed police racist opinions, but was merely covering up cracks in the plaster and brightened up the poor working conditions in most Paris commissariats .
