He didn't even say thanks

The pompiers in south Tarn were called to the rescue when the mud in a drained lake became a trap for an unwary pedestrian. The pompiers laid a path of planks across the mud and with the aid of a  strong rope managed to pull the prisoner to safety. Not even waiting to thank his rescuers the deer took to his heels and made off into the woods. (interesting French phrase used: "prendre la poudre d'escampette" - to make off. The origin may be from the occitan "escamper" , to flee; the "poudre" being the dust raised in running away). "You didn't see him for dust"
