Two confusing conversations with a Frenchman

Malc told the Frenchman parked in our grounds in a camping car, " We are off to the market with the dog Ruby" We had explained we were a foster family for Ruby. We should perhaps have explained further that we were socialising her, as when we got back he asked " did you get rid of her?" I think he thought we had gone to give her away at the market.

I then this morning said whilst chatting " avez vous une bonne retraite monsieur?" He looked quite amazed that I could ask if he had a good pension! and rightly so. I was trying to ask him if he was having a good retirement like Malc and I. !
Misunderstandings do often seem to occur, however hard you try.
