The insanity continues

Yesterday we met a lady called Sue, she is a retiree, an every day housewife from Surrey & a member of the WI she & a group of like minded ladies come to Calais every week to give out supplies to the refugees. They were at Dunkirk yesterday as were 40 bus loads of heavily armed police. Dunkirk holds upwards of 1300 refugees in tents in mud, it is only supposed to have 400 the rest have to go, most are families with young children. Sue stopped one couple with 2 children in  pushchairs who were setting off to walk to Switzerland, the children had no shoes, Sue begged them to wait until she had returned from the warehouse here with shoes but they were too frightened to stay. The WI ladies left here en masse with bags of food to hand out & scarves to tie around their faces as protection from the inevitable tear-gas. How can this be happening? Calais was less dramatic, last night we tried to buy wind up torches to give out but the hypermarket had sold out, As we left we noticed 3 refugees who were being prevented from entering by the store security, we watched a while before intervening. The refugees could go in one at a time apparently but they wanted to shop together as is normal when you're with friends. They were allowed in together if we took them in which of course we did. Kurds from Iran, lovely guys, they didn't deserve treatment like that. And so the insanity continues.....
Val says I always knew the WI ladies were just the best... a lot to emulate there.

Wendy says  What sort of bloody world are we living in where there are scenes like this... and on armistice day. It seems no one cares anymore, except about themselves. Did all those brave men perish so that we could be smug about what we have and care not for the suffering of others.
