Can sympathise with your experience. Way back yonder, I had a big molar which had to be sawn up in situ and extracted in separate pieces because its roots had hold of my jaw bone in a 3-way pincer movement. It took 4 hours under general anaestheitc, followed by a week in hospital to reset my jaw.
