If you have a problem with roads, water quality, refuse disposal, noisy or difficult neighbours, activities in the town or village, planning applications etc. etc. all of these go to the Maire and are his or her responsibility.
In England for example you would have a town council made up of elected representatives of different political parties, and the Mayor is more an elected figure head.
Here the Maire has a list of helpers but I would suggest from the knowledge we have gained of local politics, the Maire has immense power and control for his 6 years in office. The list system in small communes may mean there is no opposition on the council, and that needs only meet once a quarter.
Important then you elect someone who is up to the job, your town or village services could depend on that one person.
