I have told you I am reading 1,000 years of Annoying the French by Stephen Clarke, it is the most amusing way to read history.
I have just got to a section called " Not now, Horatio"
Nelson possessed a contemporary Englishman's loathing for the French. When in 1783 he visited France, he concluded simply, " I hate their country and their manners."
When he took up his command in 1793, he went further, telling a new midshipman: " You must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil."
I may have told you before we have friends here who live in a French village with a rescue cat they called " Nelson" I do wonder what the French villagers think when they go out calling " Nelson" in at bedtime.
