Hospital junior doctors to strike

A story familiar to UK readers is that hospital juniors work such long hours that patient safety can be at risk. EU regulations oblige hospitals to limit work to 48 hours per week and to avoid over-tiredness doctors are supposed to have a break of 11 hours after any night shift. In fact one hospital in five is failing to comply with this and juniors often work up to 60 hours and sometimes 48 hours without a break.
Minister of Health Marysol Touraine has warned hospitals that they face sanctions if they fail to take actions to meet the limits. Par contre the hospitals have warned that they will be short-handed if they comply. Today at least many will lack the full complement of junior doctors.
