Orange calling

Orange telecom (formerly France Telecom) has announced that it will end traditional telephone lines using the copper wires and exchanges, to be replaced by ADSL networks over the next 5 years. About one third of households still have the old style T sockets which have been obsolete since 2008, replaced by the RJ45 type sockets most internet users are familiar with. The "irreductibles" (stick in the muds?) will have to place a device into the line to convert to ADSL, but some businesses will need to make major changes.
Many consumers who have ADSL internet phones also pay line rental to Orange whereas some operators offer internet/telephone/TV without line rental. Perhaps the change will lead to more transparent pricing - though France Telecom even in its Orange garb is not known for being helpful.
