Dear Val,
I am looking at the Brexit with some amusement BUT as an Irish person it will affect me indirectly as over 60% of all exports from Ireland go to the UK ( mainly food with some IT and pharma) OR to put it a different way the UK relies heavily on Ireland for a large percentage of its food supply and have done for hundreds of years. So should a Brexit happen this relationship could be put under pressure by Brussels should food supply becomes scarce in the future with climate change – something to think about.
But what has me writing to you on this topic is that I find it baffling why you and the other expats who have lived and want to continue to live in France do not get French citizenship as the norm. I see you helping refugees gain citizenship but do you not wish this for yourself? And if not please enlighten me as to why not?
Would it not also help you sleep at night knowing that you are in control and a Brexit would have no effect on your lifestyle should it happen.
Val says I agree with you David, I want to take out nationality, Malcolm is happy to remain British and European. We have had many a heated argument about this. I decided a year ago to improve my French and go it alone on the application on the application. Malc with recent developments may be coming round to join me.
Malc may give his reply.
Malc says: I do not see the correlation between my status, a resident and citizen of the EU, and that of the refugees who are fleeing oppression and war in their countries. Like me they are proud of their nationality, but to remain here they need to take up local nationality. I should not have to.
The purpose of the EU was not just economic, but social and political and I have always considered that a national identity describes my origin and not where I live. Should I have remained in Yorkshire rather than moving to Lancashire or Oxfordshire? I am still a Yorkshireman, but in Europe we removed our political boundaries (mostly) allowing us to live and work where we like. If a Brexit forces me to apply for French citizenship I will do it (assuming they are willing to accept hundreds of thousands OAPs).
