Toulouse will open a
patinoire (skating rink) in the city centre on February 19th for the duration of the two weeks winter holiday. The practice had been abandoned for some years due to environmental concerns. Ecologists complained that putting an open air skating rink in the city was like "leaving a giant fridge door open". The city maire says that they also have a duty to provide leisure activities during a holiday period and that the skating will attract shoppers to the city centre to the benefit of the local economy.
