One of the winter's most impressive festivals is the Fete des Lumieres in Lyon, when the city centre buildings are illuminated in a display of "art, poetry and levity". But the 4 million visitors expected have been deemed too much of a security threat at a time when police are under stress, especially with the COP21 environment conference coming up in Paris. The festival, scheduled for 5-8th December has been cancelled.
An evening of homage to the victims of the Paris attacks will be held on 8th December.
