Student teachers not being paid

A change to the way French student teachers are trained was brought in two years ago and has just started to impact on the trainees. Instead of the academic year being split into blocks of college work and teaching practice, students now divide each week between study and classroom work.
Many are complaining that this doesn't leave enough time for study as they are preparing classes. But even worse, they are not receiving the pay which is due for the time spent in school rooms. Since the rentrée in September many have received little or no pay due to "payroll problems". Some have been offered food stamps to tide them over - but that doesn't pay the rent.
