Frightened brittany spaniels

Val says I asked Sue  if it was known why the dogs were so frightened

Morning Val,

Why were the girls so frightened ?  The guy told us that he had sold them but they came back from they buyer who said they were useless and he couldn’t do anything with them, ie., they wouldn’t hunt (Yey, good for them !).  Turns out that he had tried to speed train them with electric collars and had completely spooked them.

I should add here that although I am not a hunt supporter there are a few kind hunters who treat their dogs as companions as well as working dogs and for gun dogs it is a great life.  It is the ‘chiens courant’ who have to chase and face sangliers that I feel sorry for.  I never go to our vets on a Monday if I can avoid it as I know they will be busy sewing up and repairing dogs injured during the weekend hunt.

As for the electric collars, used wisely and sensibly (ie the ones which dogs wear to stop them crossing the boundaries of their property) they are a boon to those of you with lots of land which is too expensive to fence.

Right, off now to play hide and seek with Isabella, will today be the day she more than pokes her head out from behind the kennel ?!!

Val says  when we were at the vets with Bonny two hunting dogs were carried in, one  nearly beyond treatment, another with belly torn open revealing guts, horrendous.
We tried electric collars and soon realised how badly they affected the dogs morale and quickly stopped using them, thank heavens they are banned in Wales and there is a groundswell of opinion against them supported by the RSPA in the UK
