Casta- internet

Dear Val and Malcolm,

I have seen this utility (below) which might help some peoples Internet performance.  I have tried it on a couple of our machines and have seen some improvement on one and a greater improvement on the other.  It is only for Windows not Mac's or iPads.

Broadband tweaking -  Microsoft Windows Only - Caveat: this is for information only. If it all goes wrong you can restore windows default settings from the file drop down menu in TCP Optimizer.

Although Castanet does not currently support a faster connection it is possible to adjust computer settings to optimise the bandwidth available, in fact this could benefit anyone who is using broadband. There is a utility called TCP Optimizer, you can find it here http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php.  You will also need to know what your connection speed is, this is something you might already know, if not this website will give an idea http://www.speedtest.net.  Once connected run the test: do not do use your connection while the test is running as it will upset the results.

As you can see, mine is pretty poor at this time of day, 0.56Mbps, normally it is 1.5Mbps so you might want to run the test a few times over the day to get your highest result.

Next run TCP Optimizer, this needs to be run as an administrator so right click with the mouse over the program and run as administrator see below:
The bare-bones approach: if you do not want to read loads of technical information just follow the four steps below.
- Choose your maximum Connection Speed from the slider bar (the maximum available bandwidth, in kilobits per second) From above speed test
- Choose your Network Interface, or check to Modify All Network Adapters
- Pick "Optimal settings" from the radio-buttons near the bottom of the program
- Click on the "Apply changes" button and reboot
