Car torchings down

A strange "custom" of New Year's Eve in the banlieue (suburbs) of some large French cities is to burn cars parked in the streets or shared parking areas. The total number of incidents in 2014 was 940, down from 1067 the previous year. The number of arrests for disturbances was also down to 308 (322). The government puts the reductions down increased police presence following the violent incidents in Nantes and elsewhere before Christmas.
