French Ligue 1 left behind

French football fans are worried that the Ligue 1 (premier division) is being relegated to the second rank after the closure of the "transfer window" on Monday. England's Premier League clubs spent 1.3 billion euros on new players, Ligue 1 just 128 million euros, of which 40 million were for one player, Luiz from Chelsea to PSG. Even Monaco, owned by a billionaire, sold their two most expensive assets to Spanish and English clubs and other top players have left for teams as far apart as Russia and Portugal. Preliminary matches in the European tournaments have seen French clubs beaten by teams from other countries. Only PSG have the buying power to compete and supporters are concerned that it likely that Ligue 1 will become a one-horse race for years to come.
