The little church of St. Vincent de Varen

A charming little church with wall paintings from about 1640, only rediscovered in 2000 after being plastered over about 200 years earlier, as with  many of these tiny churches it is in need of urgent repairs. Malc has been on the committee for the last 8 years and so far they have managed to get the paintings restored and the walls treated for rising damp. There are still problems to overcome. The Mayor has promised some money (churches being the property of the communes) but with the new health centre, the drains at Arnac needing expensive work and the new town hall being converted from the old, the money has had to be deferred till 2014. Palmyre Lacan has worked tirelessly for the last 15 years but she admits she is getting on in years with poor health and fighting all the bureaucracy is getting too difficult for her and she is concerned how long she can go on. The next meeting is the AGM in November and I wondered if any one wanted to get involved in fund raising and helping this church in the Varen community.
The restoration of paintings under way
Malc is involved not from any religious reasons but simply because he is interested in the patrimoine of what is now our adopted country. The others on the committee, all French are Roman Catholics and many have used that church since they were children. They all have memories of going to services and Sunday schools and it must have been quite a different place years ago.  I will publish the date of the AGM nearer the time and let us see if we can raise some enthusiasm in the area for getting elected to the committee or breathing a little life  into the proceedings. Malc thought it funny that the meeting could not be on a Saturday as half the committee would be out chassing. He also smiled when Palmyre who had heard about TAG said to Malc  " just tell all Val's readers to send us money"  If only raising money was that simple Palmyre!
