Francois Hollande is said to be in favour of giving the countryside back to the people after numerous walkers and people out enjoying the countryside have been killed.
ANIMAL protection group Aspas says it has won the support of President Hollande after it complained about the rising number of hunting accidents – which last season saw 21 people killed in 179 accidents.
In a presentation to Mr Hollande yesterday, Aspas called for a rethink on hunting laws and especially a Sunday ban as nearly three-quarters of accidents happened on a Sunday and that the fear of being shot stopped families enjoying the countryside.
It also called for a safe no-shooting area round houses, legislation to set hunting safety rules (there is none in place at the moment, despite a law being passed in 2000) and regular sight tests for hunters.
It said he had been very receptive to their arguments and upset at the figures of numbers killed.
Now it is to send Mr Hollande its petition with 300,000 signatures calling for Sunday hunting to be banned.
The chasseurs Federation say many of their members work Saturdays so Sunday is the only day they can pursue the " sport"

Val says I am not saying ban hunting as we all know control of wild animals is needed. I am saying there needs to be more regulations curbing drinking, eye sight tests, etc. Why would you hand a blind, deaf, witless man a gun and not expect trouble.
Also controls about shooting around properties need tightening. I will not forget easily hunters shooting up into the donkey field, scaring myself and the donkeys and then killing a screaming sanglier in our field right next to the house. The hunters then took the fence down to retrieve the sanglier and went off with out replacing it. Fortunately the donkeys were so traumatised by the noise of guns they went and hid in their hut giving me chance to replace the fencing but have we got to accept this?
