This year is expected to exceed the "normal" total of about 2.47 millions and the number of deaths is already at 42. Partially responsible is the ineffectiveness of the vaccine this year. Normally it protects against three strains but one of them has mutated (H3N2 if that means anything to you) meaning many more cases have developped.
Whilst flu is generally self curing within 3 days (though patients may be infectious for a few more days) drinking lots of fluids, taking paracetamol, wearing light clothes to prevent over heating and keeping away from others should be enough. Fragile people (which apparently includes all of us over 65) should consult a doctor (by phone to start with) if symptoms are severe.
