Dogs in Finland

Hi Val
To paraphrase J of Varen:
Can you imagine the howls of outrage from dog breeders, puppy farms, the Finnish Kennel Club, etc. if the Finnish government tried this? Commercial interests would never let it happen.
 J of St Antonin

Val says my heart sank on reading this and I thought so it was one of those silly things on facebook. So I have done some research to find it does not appear to be the law.  Although so much work has been done on gaining acceptance of adopting dogs from refuges that the dog refuges are now empty. They are even explaining how to adopt dogs from refuges abroad. So it is still WELL done the FINNS.
The piece below gives you more information from a well respected animal adoption society in Finland.

One important part of our work is the international adoptions. Although our main priority is to permanently reduce the number of stray animals, we also want to recognize the dogs as individuals. According to WSPA there are about 475 million homeless dogs in the world, which accounts for 75% of the whole canine population. In Finland many people wish to adopt a homeless dog, rather than buying a pure bred puppy and (thankfully) Finnish shelters cannot meet this demand.
We always encourage people to adopt homeless animals in Finland, but if there isn't a suitable dog in the Finnish shelters, then adoption from abroad is a very good alternative.
