Be careful where you spend your €500 notes

A couple were detained by the police because they tried to pay their €210 shopping bill at a Leclerc store with a €500 note. After 20 hours in detention the police confirmed that the note was genuine and the couple were released.
Leclerc stores have counterfeit detectors but said they are not "100% reliable". The store denied that they had called the police because the couple were Africans. Management added that the couple would be welcome to continue to shop at the store. Fat chance.

Hi Val
We once got a 500 euro note from some b&b guests and worried we might lose it! Gavin went to the Post Office in St Antonin for a few stamps and tentatively offered the note. They took it without comment and gave him the change.
Val says  wonder if there would have been that outcome if  you had been of African origin?
