In the revolution monasteries and abbeys were sacked. It was thought at this time the Abbey of Beaulieu had its altar stolen by the people of Verfeil.
There the altar has been for close on 200 years, looked after and restored at great expense by the commune and its residents.
Now shock horror the Abbey have asked for it back and on having been refused the matter may go to the courts.
Tha Abbey de Beaulieu is privately owned and does put on great exhibitions, but come on, after all this time! Stick to your guns Verfeil residents, the altar now belongs in that church. (surely)
