Mouton Rothschild

We are all familiar with the Bordeaux wine from this famous vineyard (even if we can only afford the Cadet), but when the famous Baron Phillipe died in 1988 his daughter Phillipine took over the reins. She was a well known actress, Phillipine Pascal, but appeared to have the qualities of leadership and daring needed to push the brand on. Having witnessed the Gestapo arrest and deport her mother in 1944 when she was 10 years old (her father was in England with De Gaulle) she determined to rid herself of the Rothschild name and make her own way.
But she readily assumed her role as "Madame la Baronne" and continued where her father had led in developing Mouton Rothschild and its quality wines and now renowned labels designed by famous artists.
Phillippine de Rothschild died last week, aged 80. Her sons Phillipe and Julien continue to run the Chateau.
