A village undecided: Verfeil sur Seye

Hello Val
You may or may not wish to put the following on Tagline.  No problem.  The information has come from our near neighbour who is also on the village council.  She is absolutely distraught by the shortsightedness of those who voted in favour of the venture and who generally do not live within the confines of the village.  Our neighbours knows that we are 'fighting her corner'.

Earlier this year a group of young people (we understand up to 15) bought a property near to the edge of the village to live with a transient group of residents in what we British call a 'Commune'.  They brought with them a motley collection of vehicles, some of them uninsured, which they park in front of everyone elses property - never their own.  Near neighbours have been kept awake until the early hours of the morning by noise coming from the house.

At the last Council Meeting the Mayor proposed that the village should purchase the Old Gendarmerie and then sell the apartments to commune residents (not sure if he can legally omit anyone else from buying).  The proposal was for the Council to ask a Notiare to conduct a 'study' into the feasability of the idea and to this 8 voted in favour and 3 against.  Of the 8 voting in favour it is thought that none of them live within the confines of the village probably believing that this community will not affect them?????

Yesterday the commune residents had secured the keys to the building and around a dozen people were seen milling around all the apartments.  On returning to their own property they left behind the overwhelming stench of cannabis which hung in the air for several hours from the restaurant to the commune.

Speaking to a young villager in favour of the idea and saying that this is not what the old residents wanted I was given the reply "old people die"!

We have witnessed commune children inside the railings to the Monument of the Dead and attempting to climb up the structure.  The 17th century Halle is covered in chalk graftti.  How soon before they progress to spray cans?

To those of us who came to the village to live a stress free life where we can leave our doors unlocked and keys in our cars the dream is now over.  A french friend has informed us that the crime rate in the area has somewhat changed.
