I'm no expert either but some years ago I bought a book called Inventaire de la Faune de France published by Nathan. It is out of print and I got a 1995 edition from a French book dealer online (through Amazon). There have been later editions and I think one was a complete update. There seem to be a few available second hand. Expect to pay around €45 plus postage, but well worth it if you want to sort out your couleuvre vipèrine from your vipère aspic !
