One of the best known (and loved) local personalities has died

Andre Laban at work
We are lucky enough to have met Andre Laban, who died this week aged 89, on a number of occasions and to possess one of his underwater paintings.
Andre, from Marseille, worked for many years with Jacques Cousteau who was world famous for his underwater films. He said he simply asked Cousteau for a job and was asked to prepare the cameras for the filming. Later he became part of the camera crew himself and eventually an accomplished photographer, painter and poet. In his retirement in St Antonin he collaborated with Tim Grosvenor in his gallery to present his photographs (his "One man chauve" was a witty collection of photographic puns on his own lack of hair), his paintings and his book and DVD "la Passion du Bleu".
Underwater painting by Andre Laban
We bought one of the beautiful blue paintings which always reminds us of those days of more than 10 years ago when Tim and other local artists tried to make St Antonin a centre for art, which Andre Laban supported wholeheartedly, and remained its most accomplished creator.

Sous Couverture

The 13th festival around Livres d'artistes opens in St Antonin on Saturday 12th April in the Salle des Thermes (opposite the fire station). But the event is much more than an exhibition of hand made books; there are workshops, lectures, conferences and entertainments throughout the week. On CFM today at 1pm you can hear an interview with the guest of honour, Marie Rouanet, well known author.
Many local groups, including school and the maison de retraite have participated in preparation for the events, which are attracting ever more attention in and around St Antonin.
The event is organised by Mosaique en Val, with the participation of the library Mediatheque Amelie Galup. Click here to go to their website. Sous Couverture

Judging handmade books / sous couverture in St. Antonin Noble Val

This afternoon we were invited to go by the Assoc. Mosaïque En Val and judge which of the books in our opinion was the best of these handmade, artistic books. This is the 13th Festival du livre d'artiste. The subject was on the theme of round / rond
We had made a chart, we had one each to helps us decide which book we personally liked best.
We were judging on book name / nom du livre.
The story / histoire
Readability /  lisabilité
Design/ design
Illustrations/ illustrations
Quality of finish/ qualité de production
Overall aesthetic / Esthetique
Total marks/ score
Rank/ rang
Well those were our criteria, other judges may have different ideas. Interestingly Malc and I both liked the same one and our scores on the other books matched up.
We met another judge whilst there, René Bonetti, a local sculptor. Whilst talking to him we established he had an exhibit on permanent display in the library and also one at the Town Hall. It might be  interesting to pop into La Mediatheque Amelie Galup and look at this sculpture

René Bonetti, in the white gloves needed to look at these treasures
Monsieur Bonetti took me to look at his sculpture and I was so impressed I went and asked Malc [sub editor] to photograph it for TAG.
Songe d'une nuit d'ete by René Bonetti

Back to the books, the prize will be awarded at a vernissage du salon Sat 12th April at 12.h30 in the Salle des Thermes, and it will certainly be worth your while to go and look at these works of art in the Salle des Thermes. And of course give your vote for the public prize.
Art and beauty, so enriches one and we are not short of talented artists here in our region.

Cherry blossom time.

Hello
I've just read the article about all the spring flowers out at the moment. I just wanted to share that I was so taken by the beautiful cherry blossom this year that I decided to paint it. I hope the colder weather doesn't damage the beautiful flowers that are out.
Regards

Alison Mann (tarnart.com)
Val says, so very pretty i am adding it to the side bar art of thae area, so we can all enjoy for longer.

Cora Gordon artist and more information about her

On the slide show from John there is some work by an artist which Malc and I both thought was wonderful. Doing some research I came up with this website which tells us about Cora  and her relationship with Najac and as well as being an artist wrote and published books.
check out the link.

Alison Mann presents her work

My name is Alison Mann.

I am a qualified garden designer.

On moving to France , I discovered that garden design is not high on the list of priorities in rural France. I therefore turned to my first love....... painting.

I especially love painting with oils, I love the textures and colour mixes that can be created.

I have found that I can combine my two great loves, gardening and painting, by painting the flowers I love so much. I am inspired by colour, texture, form and the patterns around us in nature, which constantly change and bring so much delight.

I am always amazed that the colours and design in nature can inspire so many different emotions, from energy to peace and tranquility. These I try to capture in my paintings.

To see my work go to my web site www.tarnart.com
Thanks Alison

Val says  I look forward to looking at your website and I will add you to ''artists of the area'' I do love poppies.
I am dashing off to my poetry class soon in St. Antonin so everything will be done on my return.

Poppies on the route up to Mas del Sol

Opium poppies growing on some newly delivered shale shoring up our little road, seen a couple of years ago. Captured by Tudor Powell with his paint brush and as I look at TAG everyday  this will give me pleasure.Find them, these pretty poppies in the side panel, in art of SW France.

Remember everyone, photography is art

Does not need saying really, we all know that. When I used to frequent the large auction houses around the world I was always interested in the art sales, often comprising old photos... often very risqué. So although I am not asking for hard porn,  photos having something to do with the area can be exhibited in our local artistes collection.
