Never bored in South West France

I have invented a new winter sport, one which is great fun and no expensive equipment needed.
A stout pair of wellies with the tread well worn, an old brown coat ( preferably that colour) and a well padded rump, then you are away.
 Away I was today, sliding from the standing position, then a spectacular wobble, before flinging hands in the air and skating flying face forward, but then executing an aerial turn before sliding for a few metres on my rump in the smelly, slimy manure covered mud.
For my first attempt, marks out of ten, it has got to be ten for effort. The donkeys were holding up boards and tens were awarded from them all.
They knew I was fun. Anyone wanting to book a beginners course send me a mail, marking it  "Loony mud slide course " Please bring a total change of clothes with you.  With my powers of persuasion and advertising skills I can see it catching on and maybe becoming an Olympic sport.

Roll up, roll up to things happening in the coming days

Thursday night at the Salle des fetes at Verfeil is a Burns evening being held by the Folk'n' Jazz group with Gavin Porter as host starts at 8pm sharp.

Also Thursday night, as always the Bridge Club will meet at the Bar Bascule at Caylus, starting now 5 pm prompt instead of 5.30pm

The Friday boules group will be at Varen starting at 2.30pm

Sunday at Arnac the classical piano concerts starting at 6pm, remember these are every Sunday evening, a  musical event " chaleureux"

Monday the DVD and book swap, Spiced Cuisine delivering( why not go and talk to them if you have not ordered before) and orders being delivered from The British Cornershop by Chris Robinson
All at the Gazpacho at 10.30am

Anybody bored?

Did you say yes?  You have got to be kidding.
There is so much to do here and such a variety of things, there is surely something for everybody.
Malc has just come in from playing bridge at Caylus and as I write this, he is giving me a run down of his bridge hands with partner David.  Both of these guys love their bridge and then tomorrow they will be playing boules  at Verfeil sur Seye  at 2.30pm
I, on the other hand will be at creative writing with mentor Doreen Porter, helping us to hone our writing skills.
We have had this months book and DVD swap and I have a shelf to read before next month and  Malc and I both found a couple of DVDs we want to watch.
I am also in the Fifi gardening club and this year with Debbie at the helm, exciting things are being forecast.
One of our guest cookery writers Glynis Howgego tells me she has another set of cookery courses planned, look at her website for details, and these are for any lady ( or man) who fancies it.
The Queryls cinema has a  good programme this month ending up with a film that was in the list of top ten films for last year.
Walking groups have full programmes, occitane dancing groups, occitane talking groups, jamming sessions, folk and jazz, Quercy Grimpe climbing club, vintage car meetings, Fifi ladies groups doing everything but naked knitting,  but that is a summer activity ... do you want more.

Martyn Cox, Oral Historian and his talk

Martyn Cox is giving a talk on '' The Real Charlotte Grays''. Martyn who was Associate Producer on the Channel 4 documentary ''Behind Enemy Lines'' will now be giving the talk in the Salle des Fetes at Le Riols just outside Varen. This now means all those who could not get in at our house are now able to come. There will have to be a 2 euro charge to cover the cost of the Hall but I think everyone will think this is worth it.
The talk is at 6.30pm on Tuesday 5th of February. The Salle des Fetes is in the middle of Le Riols with easy parking, car park at the side and if needed spaces in the village. 25 people had booked in but as I say now there is no limit. . The Hall is heated and intimate, a good venue.

How to find the Salle des Fetes at Le Riols

Coming from St Antonin direction, after the station at Lexos and the dechetterie take the right fork (ie instead of bearing left to Varen), keep on and cross over the railway and river, then turn right underneath the railway bridge. Take the first left into the village centre and the salle des fetes is behind the church.
From Varen exit the village and take the first left to Le Riols, then left again at the stop sign, then as above.

Great idea for entertaining relatives

The French family from Brittany, all nine of them who stayed over Christmas in our house and gite had lots of ideas to entertain themselves. One day they arranged for the artist Michel Brassac of Verfeil to come and give them a lesson in making papier mache animals and objects. Apparently they covered our long kitchen table ( thank goodness) and under Michel's tutelage all had a great time producing masterpieces. I will certainly think of arranging a session like that when our family come. They also had a day  planned with a potter at Najac throwing pots, must have been a creative family.

Carol singing in St Antonin in the Halle

Hi Val,
The carol singing will take place under the Halle in Saint Antonin this
week-end and not in the church as stated in your post. This event is
organised by the PTA for the primary schools in Saint Antonin. Sunday 16th
December, 5.30-7.30p.m. Free mulled wine and hot chocolate- all welcome to
come and sing along. Father Christmas will also be making an appearance.

The night Fifi became truly International

Well girls, what a night.
Judith Reynolds key organiser of  the Fifi Christmas Carol Concert held at Verfeil Sur Seye  deserves a "medaille d'or" Last year the first of these events was very good but lacked the international feel, well this year  that was put right. We had the children of Verfeil singing " Jingle bells",  a number of  village children being taught English by a group of dedicated ladies, all wanting to offer their services to the local community and the children are loving it. The choir of St. Antonin ... and Caylus sang French Carols, Fifi ladies sang English and there were readings in French and English. The  residents of the village of Verfeil had a reminder  from the Mairie that very morning and the village turned out, " nombreux". Mulled wine and mince pies were plentiful and there was not a " mouse pie" in sight. I am sure everyone had the same feeling that in such a warm ambience celebrating the coming of Christmas could not have been better

Pilates at Parisot

A Pilates class is
staring in Parisot in the New Year. There is a free ‘trial’ class to

be held after January 7th;  it will last for ONE HOUR and will be held

during one the following times:

4.       Friday after 18h

Carol Concert at Verfeil, Sat 5pm

Come and sing your heart out, with French and English carols. The children of Verfeil sur Seye, the choir of St. Antonin and Fifi ladies. A great start to the christmas festivities. A real mix of  " entente cordiale"  for us all. The Salle des Fetes at Verfeil 5 till 7pm.

Arm of the Louvre opens at Lens

Created in the deprived  northern city of Lens, near Lille, a major new Gallery has been formed. A branch of the Louvre opened by President Hollande and open to the public from the 12th of Dec. It is hoped that more than 700,000 visitors will pass through its doors in the first year, bringing customers and people to the deprived area after the closing of the coal mines.

Toulouse, the place to be for Christmas on Friday 30th Nov.

The Marche de Noel with 125 wooden chalets in the Place  du Capitole will  open on Friday 30 th to 26th Dec. The Christmas season starts  in earnest with a " geant boule de neige" in the Place Saint George and 140 spectacles and animations on the theme of magic and illusion. After the launch of the special lighting effects and illuminations at 19.15 a circus troupe will walk suspended in the Square de Gaulle. A plastic structure made from recycled material in the style of 1900 will be on view and from 14.30 to 18.30  jugglers,magicians and acrobats will be performing under the  giant dome.
