Thanks to many of you

We have been helping Jean Marie Nosal and his association Via Sahel Enfants d'Afrique raise funds to build a new school in a deprived part of Bamako in Mali.
A local woman setup a school in buildings made from corrugated iron and cardboard and was eventually teaching, without payment, hundreds of poor children every week. Jean Marie said Via Sahel would fund the building of the new school and over the past two years  has raised the 35000 euros needed, persuading an architect friend to come up with a modular design which can be used anywhere.
We have received some pictures of stage one, the demolition of the old school.
Jean Marie hopes the new school will be built during this summer's vacation and will try to make a visit there to check it out.

Thanks to all Taglines readers who have contributed so far. Work in Mali continues and if you want to help, remember the "Picnic in the Park" on 20th July at the Domaine de Sautou, with Dixieland Jazz from Toulouse musicians Martin's Jazz Band. These events have raised over 3000 euros towards the project

Deddy, the band leader has an idea for picnic in the park

Hi Val and Malc
As you know , we, the band, are playing many traditional southern songs but this one remains one of the best and very emotional so far.
I do suggest you print the part it'd called the chorus "Oh my poor Nelly Gray....." and the audience should sing with the band by the way.
I come back later with some words about Dixieland for Tag
Best regards

Deddy

Nelly Gray (song)

Benjamin Hanby
"Darling Nelly Gray" is a 19th-century popular song written and composed by Benjamin Hanby. It is written as from the point of view of an African-American male slave in Kentucky whose sweetheart has been taken away by slave-owners. The man mourns his beloved, who has been sold South to Georgia (where the slave's life was conventionally regarded as harsher). He eventually dies and joins her in heaven.

History
Hanby composed the song while attending Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio in 1856, in response to the plight of a runaway slave named Joseph Selby or Shelby. Benjamin Hanby's father, Bishop William Hanby, a United Brethren minister who was active in the Underground Railroad, was attempting to raise money to free Selby's beloved

Lyrics

There's a low, green valley, on the old Kentucky shore.
Where I've whiled many happy hours away,
A-sitting and a-singing by the little cottage door,
Where lived my darling Nelly Gray.

Chorus
Oh! my poor Nelly Gray, they have taken you away,
And I'll never see my darling any more;
I'm sitting by the river and I'm weeping all the day.
For you've gone from the old Kentucky shore.

When the moon had climbed the mountain and the stars were shining too.
Then I'd take my darling Nelly Gray,
And we'd float down the river in my little red canoe,
While my banjo sweetly I would play.

What the English do on holiday

An earlier post quoted a German magazine on the typical young Brit (these are those who deserve the epithet) in Ibiza etc, but this morning France Inter radio as part of its feuillton (running series) on how fellow Europeans holiday, spotlighted what it considered a very "British" thing to do - a trip to Glyndebourne.
The people interviewed did agree that getting dressed up in dinner suits and long dresses and paying up to £300 to have a picnic was peculiarly English. But the fact that the opera productions at the beautiful location are of the highest quality is also a big draw. The opera house has been run by the Christie family for 80 years now and this type of chic entertainment was exactly what we aimed for at our Jazz at Mas del Sol, Picnic in the Park. A bit less champagne was consumed here than at Glyndebourne but the atmosphere was just as convivial. And our French visitors would be amazed to think that those opera goers would pay £300 for a picnic!

Lovely evening at the folk club

A small but dedicated group of  people who enjoy their folk music were joined last night by Roger and Eileen, the new to France English couple who have lived for the last 20 years in Norway. Rana was back from working in England over the winter and these new performers joined the usual stalwart performers for a lovely foot tapping night. I really enjoy these evenings, the music, the camaraderie and next month the club will be celebrating its 2 years of musical evenings.
The first ever evening of the clubs inception was at Mas del Sol and for the next meeting, last Thursday in June it will once again be at Mas del Sol. Let us make it a celebration of two years of great free entertainment. Every evening is free and all the performers do it for the pleasure, these nights remind me of family get togethers when we were young, when my Dad got out his accordion and played whatever anyone wanted to sing to.
So what is happening at Mas del Sol this summer.
We are hosting the  always free Folk'n' Jazz on the last Thursday in June starting at 8 pm. Arriving just after 7.30pm, have a fold up chair in the back of the car but only carry it in if we ask. We have 50 spare chairs in place.

Then on Wed July 23rd we have our " Picnic in the Park" extravaganza arriving at 7pm, a night of Dixieland Jazz with Martin's Jazz Band. The tickets for this evening are 15 euros and every penny will go to the Association Via Sahel Enfants d' Afrique. We have to pay the band but we are in negociations with the group about this as they want to do what they can to help to feed and educate starving street children. We will let you know how this develops. We have 52 booked in and we are hoping to sell 100 tickets. If you cannot come for any reason we would be more than delighted to be given donations big or small. I am not afraid to beg to save the life of a child. This is our" big "yearly fundraiser so please support us with this fun event.

Picnic in the Park is filling up, Wed. July 23rd

A rug to throw on the ground, a couple of chairs if you are worried about the linen and candelabra, but make sure you do not miss out on this evening of JAZZ and sunset.
Already we have had enough bookings to pay the band so keep sending your cheques.
We are going to make a real profit for this association which means we will be feeding little mouths in Africa and saving lives... got to be worth a bit of effort.

Families welcomed to Picnic in the Park

I have had enquiries from grandparents who have families on holiday who would all like to come to the picnic. Well behaved children can come for free and I am sure none of us possess naughty children or grandchildren!
As our first priority is to know we have paid for the band we are asking for cheques with your bookings, and we are not far off now in having the funds to pay the group.
For those wanting to post cheques at this stage make payable to
M. Johnstone

As soon as we have enough money to pay the band we can then start having cheques made out to Via Sahel

Thank you all for being as excited as me about the Picnic in the Park, Wed. July 23rd

For all of you who have booked today with such enthusiasm, thank you so much and we can promise that it is going to be a great evening.
When Malc and I were teenagers and had just got together we used to go to Redcar Jazz Club and loved listening to Jazz bands.
Well, this night will take us back to those times but with the  Mas del Sol sunset.
Keep on booking, the more of us there are, the more fun we will have.
Bookings at   taglines82@gmail.com

The style is different but the events are the same

The invitation to " Picnic in the Park" is written in quite a different way for the French. If you look in " nouvelles francaise" you will see the invitation is written in a totally different style. I asked French friend Martine to do a similar invite in French and she said " but the French won't understand any of that" and copied it in the style they would understand.
Arranging events with the French in mind are quite a different proposition which we are appreciating more and more.
The Salon  horticole d'été  is just the same, it is at this point an enigma to the French. So far only one person has understood what it is about, so it is going to take constant explaining.
I have the feeling we are going to have some fun with both these events. Someone did say " I think you are opening up a can of worms with the salon d'été horticole" a lovely expression; wonder what the French make of that one!"  and I don't agree with that anyway.

Picnic in the Park at Mas del Sol, Wed. 23rd of July

Here at Mas del Sol for this Summer evening of magic, we intend to put Glyndebourne and Henley Festival in the shade.
The helipad will be available for the glitterati dropping in but it is you and your friends we need to make this evening special.
The Jazz Band coming from Toulouse is Martins Jazz Band, look them up on their website, they are just " swingers"    martins-jazz-band.fr

The sunset at Mas del Sol is " unbelievable", mix that with picnic and dancing on the lawns to a big jazz band and we are creating a night to remember. (think of the Great Gatsby parties and remember Malcolms middle name is  Gatsby !)
Forget other concerts you may have been to in the summer, this is going to be the one talked, laughed about and enjoyed for years to come.

You must buy your tickets early and be part of the " TAGland" scene. So if you live in the Tarn, Tarn and Garonne, Aveyron and we will even let people from the Lot in, check your agenda' s and ask for tickets to be posted to you.

The evening starts at 7pm, there is plenty of parking on the site and around the lanes, we will have parking attendants to help and porters to help you in with tables and chairs. Come in choose your spot  around the stage and set up your picnic, once that is done the swinging party will begin. Visiting glitterati have promised they will sign autographs, so if you want boobs or bottom signed bring a felt tip pen. For others who will be happy with a biro bring your autograph book.

Then picnic, we personally will have out our fine china and candelabra,   our evening butler will be serving us Pimms and champagne, so think big. You would not like to be shown up by the Johnstone's, never mind the Jones's or Jolies. Wear what you like but Angelina tells me she is wearing a long backless number and Ossie Clark has specially designed Malc's summer outfit, good old Ossie.

Tickets are 15 euros each For an extra  2 euros a party of four can book a table and chairs in place but bring your own damask or linen table cloth. As you arrive and unload cars porters will be on hand to help.
If you live on the doorstep and wish to set up in the afternoon and leave tables and chairs till the following day, no problem, just do not bring your dogs, remember we have two  free range hens.
No dogs allowed at any time.
The date for this summer extravaganza will be Wed 23 rd of July  and after paying the band any profits left will go to
Via Sahel Enfants d' Afrique
Reserve a ticket by emailing taglines82@gmail.com
and then send your cheque made out to
Malcolm Johnstone and send it to
