The artists exhibiting in the old Mairie in Varen for the next two weekends are talented Dutch ladies Elly Wright and Resi van Eeten. Both have houses in the area and have exhibited widely here and abroad.
Each Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

New art gallery in Parisot

The gallery Jean-de-la-Valette opened its doors last weekend with an exhibition of works on a theme of animals under threat. Paintings and sculptures of various animals are displayed over two floors and the intention is to create an artist's residence on the third floor.
The building, in the rue de la Mairie, Parisot (82), has been loaned by a generous owner and completely restored by the members of the association Art et Patrimoine.
The exhibition will be on display until June 2nd, Tuesday - Saturday 10h-12h and 15h-19h, and on Sunday 15h-19h.

King Tut in Paris

What is being billed at the last tour of objects found in the tomb of Tutankhamun opens in Paris tomorrow. 150 items of what Howard Carter described as "wonderful things" when he opened the tomb will be on show until 15th September. The exhibition includes 60 items which have not been seen before outside Egypt.
Over 150000 tickets have already been sold (the first tour here in 1967 attracted 1.2 million visitors).
The exhibition, in the Grande Halle de la Villette, includes films and displays about the king and the discovery.

Did you miss the giant machines?

Nearly a million people went to Toulouse over the 4 days the Company Les Machines presented its spectacular "Gardiens du Temple" featuring the giant Minotaur and Ariane the spider a couple of weeks ago. If you want to see the machines the new Halle de la Machine in the Toulouse suburb of Montaudran has opened its doors to visitors where many giant and smaller machines are on view. You can even ride on the Minotaur along the "piste de geants". Open every afternoon (except Monday) from 14h - 18h, entry 9 euros for adults and less for other categories. The Halle will be closed from 7th January until 7th February for maintenance.

Gaillac to light up again

Last winter the town of Gaillac hosted a festival of Chinese lanterns which was a great success. Now a second festival is planned to open on 1st December and run until 6th February 2019. Some 80 technicians from China have arrived to unload from their containers the lions, unicorns, dragons and lanterns to prepare the display.
Since the last display closed an exhibition of Chinese art and calligraphy has been held in the town's art gallery attracting over 15000 visitors; it remains open until the end of this month.

The exhibition of Jeremy's paintings held at the Vigerie last weekend, in the most trying heatwave circumstances, was a great success with 1740 euros raised for Medecins Sans Frontieres.
Another example of the generosity of our local communities and the effort and talent of local people in raising funds for charities that help in so many lives here and overseas.

Art for health's sake

Jeremy Rewse-Davies will be holding a sale of his original paintings this weekend with proceeds in aid of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) The vernissage is Friday 3rd August from midday and the exhibition lasts until Saturday evening at 5pm. The showing is at La Vigerie, St Vincent de Varen, Varen.

Fifty photographs of local people are being exhibited by Jean Marie Perier in his gallery in Villeneuve d'Aveyron. The gallery was opened in 2015 by the photographer who wanted to bring his work to the area he had chosen for his retreat  from the Paris milieu he was used to. Illustrated articles in a local newspaper with commentaries by the author on the subjects he photographed ( local people: les gens d'ici) gained him renown and popularity.
The Maison de la Photo is open Tuesday to Saturday (and Sundays if a holiday).

Le Corbusier at Rodez

Best known for his modernist architecture and advocacy of the artistic use of concrete in his buildings, Le Corbusier was also a talented painter, drawer and sculptor.
The Musee Soulages in Rodez has dedicated 500m2 to an exhibition of 35 works from the architect's artistic output from now until 20th May 2018.
Tracing his thinking and development from the 1920s  to the 1960s  the exhibition has been curated by the architect Jacques Sbriglio, for whom Le Corbusier is the "go to" figure in modernism.

Vintage Chrismas fair in Albi this weekend

Over 100 exhibitors will offer "vintage" items, from clothing to home decor at the Exhibition hall, over three days, 24th, 25th and 26th, from 10h-19h. There will be animations, music and food, plus an assembly of vintage cars on Sunday.
It is too late to enter the "World Championship of Ugly Sweaters", to be held on Saturday, with apparently 600 inscriptions (though many are thought be spurious). But as organisers remind us, Colin Firth in "Bridget Jones's Diary" would make a good candidate.

Chinese Lamtern Festival

Some 40 Chinese workers are busy constructing and erecting the Lantern Festival in a Gaillac park. The giant Heavenly Temple soars 18 metres, a replica of the original in Beijing (Pekin in French); the 70 metre long dragon is made entirely from porcelain plates and cups wired together; all the elements of the temple are hand made and covered with hand coloured silk.

The festival will run from the 1st December  to 31st January, pay on entry. As the elements will all be illuminated it is best seen at night, so will be open from 18h-23h.
Despite the undoubted spectacle, presented for the first time in Europe, the choice of Gaillac is not without controversy as its maire Patrice Gausserand is accused by some opposition members of using his office to promote his private business links with China. This will be considered by the Tribunal Administratif next week (13th November).

Sounds of the sixties

Actually, photographs of the popular musicians of that era. An exhibition of 72 pictures by Jean-Marie Perier is open at the Musee Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi.

Perier had access to most of the big (French) names of the time: Johnny Halliday, Sylvie Vartan, Francoise Hardy, Eddy Mitchell as well as visiting groups such as the Beatles and Rolling Stones.
Many of the superb photos were posed for by Perier's sitters, as well as some photo-journalist shots. Perier, who now lives in Aveyron and still travels the world with his exhibitions (currently in London with a collection of fashion photos) is proud to show these works in Albi's magnificent setting.

Textile art exhibition

A vernissage of work of various textiles and large size images will be held in St Antonin tomorrow (3rd October), 19h. The exhibition will be open until 1st December at Bazart in rue St Angel.

Graffiti exhibition

From tomorrow (Saturday 30th September) until 8th October an exhibition of graffiti and street art will be held in the Gallery 50cinq in Toulouse.
Called "Mister Freeze" the exhibition will feature the work of 45 artists, some well known, some less so.

New open day at Draw International

A l'occasion de la fin de leur résidence artistique à DRAWinternational, Caylus, artistes en résidence Heloisa Pomfret (Brésil /USA et Lezli Rubin-Kunda (Canada/Israël) vous invitent à leurs ateliers. 

Tomie Seo (Japon) artiste en résidence à Caylus en 2014 est revenue, elle sera en résidence jusqu'au fin Octobre, vous pouvez voir les débuts de son projet et elle sera contente d'échanger avec vous.
