Fifty photographs of local people are being exhibited by Jean Marie Perier in his gallery in Villeneuve d'Aveyron. The gallery was opened in 2015 by the photographer who wanted to bring his work to the area he had chosen for his retreat  from the Paris milieu he was used to. Illustrated articles in a local newspaper with commentaries by the author on the subjects he photographed ( local people: les gens d'ici) gained him renown and popularity.
The Maison de la Photo is open Tuesday to Saturday (and Sundays if a holiday).

Two of our interests in one post

Photography is one subject that interests Taglines a lot and there are many superb photos taken not only here in Tagland, but throughout the world. One of the photos of the year was that brave woman in America defying a line of fully armed and armoured riot police to arrest her for just standing there.
There was the superb Visa exhibition of photo-journalism in Perpignan and the nostalgic expo of sixties rockers at the Toulouse Lautrec museum in Albi.
You will know that our interest in and help for refugees from South Sudan brings us into contact with these young men fleeing the "forgotten war" which has claimed 300000 lives since 2012. The Sudanese government and its unofficial militia persecuted its black citizens and since South Sudan became independent in 2011 the almost inevitable civil war ensued.
American photo-journalist Adrianne Ohanesian has followed the conflict from on the ground and has been awarded the Prix Bayeux-Calvados for her work from 2012-2017. A sample of her work is available at the link below.

This is a country that European countries now want to send refugees back to, with so-called "safe conducts" given by a president who is a wanted war criminal.

Sounds of the sixties

Actually, photographs of the popular musicians of that era. An exhibition of 72 pictures by Jean-Marie Perier is open at the Musee Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi.

Perier had access to most of the big (French) names of the time: Johnny Halliday, Sylvie Vartan, Francoise Hardy, Eddy Mitchell as well as visiting groups such as the Beatles and Rolling Stones.
Many of the superb photos were posed for by Perier's sitters, as well as some photo-journalist shots. Perier, who now lives in Aveyron and still travels the world with his exhibitions (currently in London with a collection of fashion photos) is proud to show these works in Albi's magnificent setting.

Photo-journalism expo at Perpignan

Visa pour l'Image 2017 opened its doors yesterday (2nd September)  in Perpignan. With 25 different exhibitions, spread over several venues the 29th edition of the important Photo-journalism is expected to attract thousands of visitors over the next two weeks.
The exhibitions range from China, Mosul, the Atlas mountains and the lives of forgotten widows in various countries. All document the lives of people threatened by pollution, poverty, war or persecution, usually in black and white. The photographers themselves are often threatened (one French man is currently held in Turkey) and their work is not only art, but also journalism of the highest order.

This seems a good idea

The Conseil Departmental of Haute Garonne has put several hundred old photographic post cards on line and invited amateur photographers to re-create them in their modern setting.

Those of us who took advantage of John Dawson's superb collection of old photos of the area could perhaps try this. The main problem looking at the 2016 version of the above scene is being run over by the traffic. So if you try it be careful!

Exhibition of Bowie photos in Carmaux

Philippe Auliac at Carmaux with David Bowie and Friends

Philippe Auliac wanted to be close to his idols in the world of rock music, but studying photography gave him his first chance. Aged 17 his first assignment was to go to the Gare du Nord and meet David Bowie. From there he became one of Bowie's three official photographers and spent the next 30 years travelling and documenting the singer's life.
His exhibition "David Bowie and Friends" is at the Clap-cine in Carmaux until 18th June. Open every day the exhibition is part of a season celebrating Bowie, with films, talks and concerts.

Pictures worth a thousand words

The story of the "zone a defendre" (popularly known as a ZAD) at the proposed dam at the forest of Sivens in the Tarn, captured all the headlines a couple of years ago. Groups of ecologists occupied the site and efforts to dislodge them led to violent clashes with the police - including the death of one protester.
A Toulouse based photo journalist spent six months at the site and is now holding an exhibition of some of his work at the Photon Gallery in the city. Included are a number of diaporamas which can viewed via your smartphone or gallery viewer.

Marc Riboud, photographer, dies age 93

The exhibition "Visa pour l'image" of photo-journalism at Perpignan (closes Friday) includes a selection of the work of one of France's most celebrated photographers, Marc Riboud, who died yesterday. Perpignan has a retrospective of his meeting with Fidel Castro in Cuba in 1963. His wife was due to be at the exhibition today.

One of his most famous pictures is the "Girl with a flower", showing a peace protester confronting armed guards at the Pentagon.

Photo-journalists at Perpignan

This week, until Friday 2nd September, Perpignan will be hosting its annual "Visa pour l'image" exhibition of photo-journalism. With more than 20 exhibitors in several locations this is one of Europe's major celebrations of this art. This is one of the photographs taken by Ronan Roger, showing the Milky Way above the Pyrenees. The col de Tourmalet so well known as a Tour de France climb also provided Roger with his point of view for this superb photo.

Photos of buildings could be illegal

A bill in the Assembly will make it legal to photograph oneself in front of  well-known landmark buildings such as the bridge at Millau. Few will be aware that images of iconic structures may well be subject to the copyright of the architects or owners of the buildings. Consequently photographs taken without permission, and published, will be in breach of copyright.
The amendment proposed will allow a "panorama right", ie the building is just part of the general view so the copyright will not apply. Owners of the rights may still object if the picture is used for commercial purposes. Clearly the law was rarely applied to judge by the enormous number of pictures published of the Millau Viaduct (including here on Taglines; no doubt Gareth - being a lawyer - had clearance).

When can you publish someone's picture?

If you take someone's photo can you publish it in social media, such as Facebook? It seems there are strict rules to follow or  you can land in hot water. This has been in the news as a young man took a "selfie" with Jean Marie le Pen then published advising his followers not to vote for the FN.
Le Pen blames this on part for the party's defeat in the regional elections and says it was taken without his permission and is used to show him in a bad light.

The law says that citizens have a right to their image which should not be published without their permission (written or oral) and even if permission has been granted the picture cannot be used to show them in a bad light, or for commercial reasons. Withdrawal of the picture plus damages of around 4000 euros are what the courts typically order. It is purely a civil matter and the possessor of the right needs to take court action. Particularly frowned upon are intrusions into one's "sentimental, family or health" matters.
Presumably such rights are routinely flouted by the "press people" - though many so-called celebrities seem to be just attention seekers.
Since M Le Pen's photo is now widely seen in the press the damage is done and only the original taker of the selfie is at risk. We hope.

PhotoFolies in Aveyron

A month of exhibitions of contemporary art photos will be held in several Aveyron towns, including Villefranche de Rouergue, Rodez, Rignac and Lanuejouls will take place until 31st October. 17 spaces will show photos and there will be films on the subject as well as workshops.
The 27th edition of the PhotoFolies hopes to attract up to 15000 lovers of the art to entries in the "Light and Voluptuousness".

The Musee Toulouse Lautrec will be holding an exposition of photographs taken shortly before the star's death in 1962. Over three days Vogue photographer Bert Stern took over 2000 shots in what he subsequently called "The Last Sitting". The museum has chosen 60 pictures, including two which Marilyn refused to allow Vogue to use. Plus 12 film posters showing the iconic star. The exhibition runs until 6th January 2016.
