Keeping up the good work

Another eventful weekend awaits those who will be participating in the Telethon appeal for donations to medical research. Many schools, employees and private citizens will be taking part in events designed to gain sponsorship or cash donations to the Telethon. Over 70 million euros was raised last year and the TV chains will be dedicating many hours of broadcast entertainment to help viewers pledge their support.
Amongst the local activities the sapeurs pompiers at Laguepie will be offering to wash your car (and providing coffee and cake while you wait) for your generous donation. Taglines will be taking our car for its annual wash. If you give 10 euros it may be bit more expensive than the car wash - but personal service and good humour for a worthy cause make it worthwhile.
Some activities are threatened with disruption by the gilets jaunes, but the genuine protestors amongst them will surely support this action of solidarity with sufferers of the diseases the Telethon will be helping.

Taglines has featured the story of Sethi many times over the years. The little boy suffers from a rare condition which attacks the production of bone marrow and hence healthy blood and readers have followed his story and offered help where possible. At four years old in a Paris clinic his marrow was removed then he was treated with chemo-therapy and kept in a sterile bubble before the marrow was replaced. Now six he has started at normal school and loves being a pupil. But Sethi is not cured and needs blood transfusions every three weeks, but his life is transformed. This weekend he is an ambassador for the Telethon which raises money for research into such rare conditions and provides help where it is needed.
We will be contributing by having our car washed by the Laguepie pompiers (provided their karchers are not frozen). There are opportunities to contribute at an event near you.

Time to wash the car again

From Friday evening until Sunday morning French TV stations will hold their annual Telethon, a 30 hour transmission to raise awareness of and raise funds for research into rare medical conditions. There will be community efforts in over 100 towns and cities and Montauban is one of the flagship venues.
Last year the combined efforts raised a staggering 94 million euros and this year the number to call will be displayed on the Eiffel Tower. Many local villages will also hold fund raising events and as usual we will take our cars for their annual wash by the pompiers at Laguepie on Saturday.

Telethon raised 93 million euros

Last December's Telethon was held in the shadow of the Paris attacks, leading to some events being cancelled, but nevertheless raised over 93 million euros for medical research. Collections at events (such as pompiers washing cars) raised over 35 millions with the rest from calls to the televised events over the weekend. Internet donations were nearly 10% higher than previously reflecting the growth of that medium.
The money raised is mainly for research into conditions caused by brain dysfunctions, such as cerebral palsy but also to provide help to patients and their families. The 2016 event will  be in December as usual.

Time to wash the car

This weekend sees the 29th edition of the Telethon, a TV based charity appeal. Last year the events organised by people and children raised 84 million euros for the chosen charities. The main beneficiaries are all health related, much going on research into neuro and muscular diseases, plus care for sufferers and education for families affected.

One of the local events is the offer to wash your car made by the pompiers in Laguepie. Usually accompanied by an offer of coffee and cake! Our cars are so infrequently washed that we always take advantage of this offer, which usually also means a little snack for the dogs. (One pompier was a little taken aback when Twister rather enthusiastically took the cake offered, and almost a couple of fingers with it - labradors are not too well mannered when it comes to food).

Our once a year car clean

Coming up the Telethon and once again the Pompiers will be cleaning cars in Laguepie and other villages, to raise money for medical research on the 6th of Dec.
The Telethon, a French fund-raising event, belongs to everyone! It takes place the first week-end of December every year with the help of hundreds of thousands of volunteers, millions of participants and lots of artists. The Telethon is also a 30 hour TV show)

(The cars were actually cleaned not too long ago but let us put their dirtiness down to our dusty country roads rather than our tardiness.)
