Violent deaths coming up today in the courts at Albi

Reading this in the Depeche I thought exactly the same thing. Look how long people have been in prison before their cases come to court. The longest someone was held was from 2009, then another in 2010 and then two in 2012. It does not say if there have been preliminary court appearances, although one was in the middle of legal battles but for someone to be in prison since 2009 before coming up to trial amazes me.
Is there something I am missing here.  anyone know about the French legal system?
On the face of it it seems to be an infringement  of human rights.
