At a squat in Toulouse occupied for 6 years by squatters the gendarmes were out in force there and in surrounding squats. The squatters were not just in someone else's property but had been found by the gendarmes to be gang a of thieves stealing big plant and agricultural equipment... and I bet they left the place in a mess.
Feel very strongly against squatters who never take away rubbish. Before they get sentenced for theft I would have them out cleaning up the property ready to be given back in a fit state to the owners. Obviously handcuffed and with ball and chain just for an extra difficulty factor.
