The mystery of the defrosting freezer

Hi Val
I have a question which is intriguing me and I wondered if anyone out there
in the blogosphere has any knowledge about it. Recently our cleaning lady
went to the house found that our freezer had defrosted itself, leaving
melting ice cream and other such gloopy liquids in a glorious mess on the
kitchen floor. She looked at the clock on the oven, it was working which
meant that there hadn't been a power cut, despite the winds and snow etc.
Damien the wonderful man from the electro-menager shop in St Antonin went to
the house yesterday to check out the freezer. He tested everything said that
the freezer and the fridge were working, but that the house was too cold for
the freezer to work properly. Hence the defrosting episode. I have never
heard of anything like this. Has anyone else?
Cheers

Hi Val
In answer to Celia, I've read advice not to put freezers in cold garages, because the thermostat is designed to switch on and off in routine domestic temperatures, and can eventually go into a slower and slower cycle, to the point where the freezer isn't doing its job properly. I don't understand all the detail - you can probably tell - but yes, what has happened is not unheard of.
