An explanation for the freezer defrost

Dear Val and Malcolm,

Hopefully a clear explanation of why the freezer compartment defrosts.

Fridge Freezer

The fridge freezer thermostat is in the fridge and is set to say 4°C.  When the ambient outsidetemperature falls below 4°C the fridge thermostat is satisfied and does not turn on the compressor, this is responsible for cooling the fridge freezer.  The freezer compartment does not have its own thermostat so the compressor is never turned on and the temperature in the freezer starts to rise from -18°C to ambient temperature and defrosts
