France first for tourists?

A study published by the Director of industry and competition (and the Bank of France) suggests that France retained its top spot in 2013, with over 84 million visitors. Top of the visitor list are Germans followed by the British, yet tourists spend more in America or Spain. The study also suggested that the number nights in paid accommodation fell well short of the number of tourists. Most Taglines readers will think "that's because they stay with us!", but perhaps it is also linked to many tourists just passing through en route to Spain or Italy. One commentator suggests that a German going to Spain will pass through France twice and spend all his money in Spain.
