First European Cancer Conference

The "Canceropole" in Toulouse, a site which assembles treatment and research facilities will take part in the first European Conference on progress in treating cancer this week. Today, Wednesday is World Cancer Day, marking the struggle against these diseases around the world. Two Nobel prize winners are among the scientists and medics meeting up in Toulouse where papers and conferences will discuss latest developments in detection, prevention and treatment of cancers.
In France lung cancer remains the main cancer causing death in men, second in women. But most other common cancers have shown significant survival rates beyond 5 years. Breast cancer is the commonest cancer in women, but with "survival" rates now at 87% scientists are optimistic that more progress can be made.
Also announced this week is that the Pierre Fabre pharmaceutical group, based at Castes, will be creating a fund to support companies and institutions working in oncological and dermatological medicine, with regard to research and development of drugs. This is to encourage new initiatives whether via start-ups,  public or private researchers in bio-medicine.
