Now it is official , they simply do not know or understand about sherry. How do they have their mince pie and Christmas cake without a glass of sherry I joked to our French friends, knowing full well I would need to explain sherry, Christmas cake and mince pies [or if Fifi have made them ,
mice pies] and how can they make sherry trifle? Trifle, what is that? In the discussion about sherry Malc explained it is a fortified wine from Spain. This had them laughing in the aisles as they were imagining a bottle with turrets like a castle. Not so impossible I thought when we had been given a bottle of brandy shaped like the Eiffel tower! Anyway that explains why we always buy our sherry in England and bring it over. I was amazed that the elite, academic Varenois who live part of the time in Paris or in another case Laos, and the very intelligent, totally ''au fait'' with French society, Verfeillaise knew their brandy so well but not their sherry.

Dear Val
We were surprised to discover recently that sherry is not that well known in Spain either. Friends heading towards Bilbao, whom we had asked to pick us up a bottle while they were there, were unable to find it. Must be a speciality local to Jerez (near Seville), whence it comes, we reckoned...
xx Chris
PS The Portuguese don't sell sherry either - like many Spanish products, they completely deny its existence!i
