I assume you have decided not to install a French keyboard on the ipad? If by any chance this is not the case, you know you go to general, to keyboard, and install French, and then it auto-corrects to French accents comme ça by pressing the sphere setting bottom left?

Malc says: We have installed the azerty keyboard, but it is only really useful for typing in French, not for inserting the odd word. And it will only correct words when it thinks there should be an accent - so for example many past participles look like similar words, but with an accent eg "charge" and "chargė". Par contre, even in the qwerty keyboard if, as Nev says, you hold down the letter you want a list of accented options appears and you just drag the one you want.
