Open day at the archives

It is 350 years since King Louis XIV granted a charter to build the world famous Canal du Midi, to link the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of France.

A building to house all the documents and artefacts relating to the canal was opened in Port St Etienne in Toulouse as long ago as 1833. The historic archives will be open to the public tomorrow, Sunday 21st May, with guided tours. Normally the plans and documents are only available to researchers, and this will be a unique opportunity for the general public to inspect part of the region's heritage.
